An Extreme Cold Warning is in force until Thursday afternoon due to a blast of arctic air that is bringing dangerously low temperatures to West Central Texas.
Temperatures in the single digits and teens will combine with gusty north winds to produce wind chills as low as 10 below zero, according to the San Angelo National Weather Service. The whole West Central Texas region, including the cities of San Angelo, Abilene, Brownwood, and Junction, is under the warning.
Because prolonged exposure to these conditions can be fatal, residents should take care to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Long-term freezing temperatures may also put water pipes at danger of breaking.
Preventive Actions:
When you’re outside, wear many layers, such as insulated gloves, a face mask, and a hat.
To keep pipes from freezing, let indoor faucets drip.
Provide warm shelter to cattle and pets to protect them.
Elderly neighbors and those without heat should be checked.
Hazardous weather will continue until Thursday afternoon, when temperatures are predicted to gradually increase. Keep abreast of local weather advisories and take the appropriate safety measures.
