We now know the names of all the storms that will occur during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins on June 1.
The World Meteorological Organization prepares the list of storm names well in advance of hurricane season. However, the number and intensity of storms that are expected to emerge this year are still unknown.
Is a Tropical Storm Andrea or perhaps a Hurricane Karen on the horizon? Jerry, how about Tropical Depression?
When sustained winds hit 39 mph, a tropical storm is named; when sustained winds hit 74 mph, it is called a hurricane.
Based on weather statistics from 1991 to 2020, an average Atlantic hurricane season consists of approximately 14 tropical storms, seven of which develop into hurricanes.
In the coming weeks and months, corporate, academic, and governmental organizations will release forecasts regarding the anticipated intensity of the 2025 hurricane season.

Each new storm receives the next name on the list, which is distributed alphabetically. Due to the dearth of names that start with those letters, there are no Q, U, X, Y, or Z names.

Although Hilary devastated parts of California and the Southwest in 2023, eastern Pacific hurricanes rarely directly affect the United States. More than two weeks ahead of the Atlantic season, the eastern Pacific season starts on May 15.

Hurricanes from the Central Pacific, which can occasionally strike or affect Hawaii, have their own list of names. Tropical cyclones in Australia and the Indian Ocean, as well as typhoons in the western Pacific, are listed separately.
How and why do hurricanes acquire names?
Hurricane forecasters had to use phrases like “the storm 500 miles east-southeast of Miami” to describe storms before they began giving them names. However, the storm’s position would shift six hours later.
Additionally, it was more difficult to identify which storm was being reported when multiple storms were occurring simultaneously.
The United States started naming hurricanes after women in 1953. Both male and female names were in circulation by 1979. Both masculine and female names are used alternately.
Based on stringent standards, the Geneva-based World Meteorological Organization selects hurricane names years in advance. A hurricane’s name is “retired” by the WMO and replaced by another if it is extremely expensive or deadly.
