Law enforcement officials have confirmed that a young boy, aged 11, lost his life in a tragic incident involving a subway car on Monday morning. The boy was hit by a low beam as the train approached a Brooklyn stop.
At about 10:15 a.m., the youngster was reportedly traveling on a G train that pulled into Smith-Ninth Street Station.
There was a stretcher close by, and first responders were spotted congregating on the tracks under a trestle that extended over the station entrance.
Trains were stopped between the Bedford-Nostrand and Church Avenue stations, causing a significant disruption to service on the subway line as police investigated the collision, according to the MTA.
Tragically, this incident is simply the most recent example of the disturbing trend of adolescent subway commuters documenting their risky antics for the benefit of internet viewers. At least six people have died this year as a result of the careless stunts.

Then, on a single day in June, two teenagers were hurt—one died—while riding the Metro.
In Queens, a 14-year-old was injured earlier in June when he hit his head on a beam as he entered a station.
In 2023, hundreds of reports surfaced of at least five fatalities while subway surfing.
Though officials in the state and city have begun a public awareness campaign to warn teenagers about the trend, NYPD statistics show that instances have been on the rise compared to the previous year.
