Cops kill spear-wielding man after family stabbing in Maryland

COLUMBIA, MD

– A 23-year-old man was shot and killed by police Monday evening in Columbia after allegedly stabbing a family member and confronting officers while armed with a spear.

Howard County police responded around 7:30 p.m. to a 911 call from the 9200 block of Wilbur Court where a man reported being stabbed. Officers later located the suspect at the intersection of Oakland Mills Road and Carters Lane. Authorities say the suspect had called 911 himself, stating he was armed.

When officers arrived, they found the man holding a large double-edged spear. Witnesses at the scene reported that he advanced toward officers and refused repeated commands to drop the weapon. Officers opened fire, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The stabbing victim was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition.

No police officers were injured during the encounter.

The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division has taken over the case and is continuing its review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
