South Amboy man sentenced in fatal Brick hit-and-run, booked into Ocean County Jail

BRICK, New Jersey.After being found guilty of escaping the scene of a fatal pedestrian collision that happened in Brick last year, Mark D. Carey, of South Amboy, has been booked into the Ocean County Jail.

Carey, 34, was given a sentence in relation to the event that killed Julia Sutton, 56, of Weehawken on January 13, 2024. Around 9:15 a.m., according to the authorities, Sutton was strolling along the shoulder of Route 35 South close to Bay Avenue when he was hit by a car. After the crash, Carey left the scene.

Sutton was taken by emergency personnel to Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center, where she was declared deceased.

Investigators concluded that a 1999 Ford Explorer registered to Carey was involved in the collision after a thorough investigation headed by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit, in cooperation with Brick Township Police and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit. Carey was the driver at the time of the deadly accident, according to the evidence.

After processing, he was first released in accordance with New Jersey Bail Reform standards after being arrested without incident at his South Amboy home. Now, Carey has started his term.

Records of inmates attest to the six-year sentence.

Carey was formally committed on June 13 and is currently serving a term with an anticipated release date of June 12, 2031, according to Ocean County Jail records. He was found guilty of a third-degree crime—leaving the scene of a deadly accident—under N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5.1.

According to the case’s records, no bond was established, and Carey is currently completing his term without the possibility of being released on bond. According to jail records, Carey is a Caucasian male who is 5 10 and weighs 230 pounds. He has blue eyes and black hair.
