Erie Man Snags $1.16M Lottery Jackpot

The township of Mill Creek, Pa. The Pennsylvania Lottery said that Gary Winner, a retiree from Erie County, won $1,162,845 Thursday from a Cash 5 with Quick Cash jackpot ticket that was sold at Giant Eagle in Millcreek Township. Winner was given a ceremonial check.

The 64-year-old winner bought $20 Quick Pick tickets on June 9 after the jackpot climbed beyond $2 million. His winning ticket and another ticket that was sold in Butler County but hasn’t been claimed yet split the total reward.

Winner, who works part-time at a golf shop, said he was blown away when he found out he had won. He intends to spend more time on the golf course, renovate the house, and assist his wife in retiring.

Meals on Wheels Erie, a nonprofit organization that provides more than 50,000 meals to seniors each year, will get a $10,000 bonus from Giant Eagle, the business that sold the winning ticket, according to store officials.

Support for elders is highlighted by the lottery.

Pennsylvania Lottery Secretary of Revenue Pat Browne commended merchants like Giant Eagle for their contribution to Lottery sales and stated that winners support important services for elderly Pennsylvanians.

No additional information on the Butler County ticket that is still pending has been made public, and the winning ticket in the Cash 5 drawing matched all five numbers.

The lottery reminded players that they have a year from the date of the drawing to redeem their winnings.
