Virginia man sentenced to 25 years to life for fatal 2021 Long Island City shooting

Queens, New York.Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said Wednesday that a Virginia man had been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2021 shooting death of 33-year-old Kayron Wilson in Long Island City.

In February, Khalik Berry, 35, was found guilty on two charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and second-degree murder. On May 10, 2021, shortly after midnight, prosecutors said, Berry and another man approached a parked automobile on 40th Avenue. Berry then opened fire, striking Wilson seven times in the arms, belly, and back.

Wilson and his girlfriend, who was unhurt, were sitting in the front passenger seat of a Mercury Milan. Berry and his accomplice took off in a different car after the shooting. Wilson was taken to a nearby hospital and subsequently declared deceased.

The gunman escaped New York and was apprehended in Virginia a few weeks later.

In June 2021, one month after the shooting, Berry, a Queens native, was captured in Virginia and extradited to New York to face charges. According to reports, the accomplice didn’t shoot.

According to District Attorney Katz, this defendant killed the young father in cold blood by firing a gun seven times. The defendant fled the jurisdiction following this utterly absurd deed and was finally caught in Virginia a month later.

Berry was found guilty by a jury on February 27. Justice Michael Yavinsky of the Queens Supreme Court handed down the sentence on Tuesday.
