Teen charged with murder in fatal March shooting of 16-year-old on Liberty Avenue

Queens, New York.Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz stated on Wednesday that a 16-year-old St. Albans resident has been charged with second-degree murder for allegedly shooting and killing another youngster in broad daylight after they both got off an MTA bus in Jamaica on March 26.

At around 2:20 p.m., the defendant and 16-year-old Sincere Jazmin disembarked off the Q83 bus near Liberty Avenue and 173rd Street, when the masked defendant allegedly produced a gun and shot Jazmin in the torso, according to the prosecution. The suspect took off on foot from the scene.

Jazmin passed out at a deli close to 172nd Street after attempting to escape across Liberty Avenue. After being taken to a neighboring hospital, he was declared deceased.

When the suspect turned himself in to the NYPD, he fled the state.

The defendant allegedly fled New York after the shooting and finally came back this week. On Tuesday morning, he turned himself in to police at the 103rd Precinct.

Judge Glenda Hernandez of Queens Criminal Court arraigned the teenager on Tuesday on two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree murder. He is scheduled to return to court today, and if found guilty, he may spend anywhere from 25 years to life behind bars.

District Attorney Katz stated that this case is an illustration of the mindless gun violence that jeopardizes public safety and claims the lives of too many of our children.
