Newark, New Jersey.On Thursday morning, traffic backed up at major intersections and along important routes like the Garden State Parkway, the George Washington Bridge, and various interstates, causing numerous delays and construction slowdowns for commuters throughout New Jersey.
Traffic on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge was backed up on the lower level eastbound as of 8:38 a.m. in Fort Lee. It took fifteen minutes to get from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge via I-95.
There were also reports of slowdowns along the Garden State Parkway due to volume. Delays started to build on the southbound side of the exit at Exit 130B-A for US 1 in Woodbridge Township about 7:51 a.m.
As of 7:42 a.m., traffic on I-280 westbound was moving slowly from Harrison’s east of the Stickel Drawbridge to Newark’s east of Exit 15 for NJ 21. Drive times were nonetheless impacted by congestion even if all lanes were still open.
On Thursday morning, NJ 21 encountered multiple northbound backlog sites. There were delays around 7:34 a.m. from Clifton just west of the Garden State Parkway to north of Exit 13 at Ackerman Avenue. As early as 7:22 a.m., more traffic was observed in Newark between Miller Street and Clay Street and Mount Pleasant Avenue.
With all lanes available as of 7:25 a.m., southbound delays were also seen on US 1&9/Tonnelle Avenue from just before Carlton Avenue in Jersey City to south of NJ 495/NJ 3 in North Bergen Township.
Traffic on the turnpike and parkway corridors is slowed by construction.
Travel interruptions were also caused by several construction zones. Due to roadwork, the New Jersey Turnpike inner highway southbound at Interchange 10 (NJ 440/I-287) in Edison Township was closed as a ramp as of 8:32 a.m.
As of 8:02 a.m., there was a right lane restriction on the inner road southbound between Exit 124 and the Jon Bon Jovi Service Area in Sayreville on the Garden State Parkway.
Between Hamilton Township and Hammonton, the Atlantic City Expressway saw westbound work, with a left lane and shoulder restricted until 2:30 p.m. It was suggested that drivers yield to highway workers.
In other news, the right shoulder of US 202 southbound near CR 613/Main Street in Readington Township was closed until 3:00 p.m. due to construction. Similar limitations applied to US 46 in both directions through Mountain Lakes and Denville Township, and US 22 in Scotch Plains.
Travel conditions on the George Washington Bridge were further impacted by ongoing construction between the New Jersey and New York sides, which resulted in a right lane closure until 3:30 p.m.
