Liberal Fund-Raising Drive Seeks $250 Million to Aid Pushback Against Trump

According to those briefed on the issue, several of the nation’s biggest leftist foundations are covertly trying to raise at least $250 million to support civil groups fighting President Trump and what they see to be his gradual slide toward authoritarianism.

The endeavor is still in its infancy and is attempting to obtain initial commitments. However, the scope of the joint project has drawn attention in the highly connected field of charity. It occurs at a time when many attempts to raise money for liberal work are failing and contributors are moping about their mistakes.

It would rank among the most financially ambitious efforts to counter Mr. Trump’s attacks on institutions if it were effective. In a network of progressive donors who have grown weary of the new administration’s policies, some see it as a ray of light.

The funds would not go to Democratic candidates or committees, but rather to impartial charity organizations. According to the people, the final beneficiaries might be organizations or individuals that bring legal action against the government, offer activists security and safety, or fund news media outlets or nonprofits deemed necessary for democratic operations.

Eight people who were informed on the endeavor described it as being cloaked in secrecy. According to someone who has seen the word used, some funders and nonprofit leaders who are aware of it have started calling the participants “The Huddle.”

Fearing that leaks could jeopardize their work and incite Mr. Trump’s retaliation, the charity executives and donors engaged are closely monitoring the specifics of their plans and the identities of the participants.
