10 Charged With Attempted Murder in Officer Shooting at ICE Detention Center

On Monday, eleven individuals detained in connection with the shooting death of a police officer at a Texas Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility were charged with attempted murder.

The incident happened on July 4th after individuals damaged automobiles parked at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, which is roughly 28 miles south of Fort Worth, and blew off fireworks there. The episode coincided with nationwide protests against the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement and other policies, some of which were celebratory.

A criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas accused the 10 individuals with three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer apiece. Additionally, each of them was charged with three counts of firearm discharge related to a violent offense.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office announced on Sunday that the officer, who suffered a neck wound, had been released from the hospital. The identity of the officer was not disclosed.

Cameron Arnold, Savanna Batten, Nathan Baumann, Zachary Evetts, Joy Gibson, Bradford Morris, Maricela Rueda, Seth Sikes, Elizabeth Soto, and Ines Soto are the ten individuals named in the complaint. One defendant is from College Station, Texas, and the other nine are from the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

Daniel Rolando Sanchez, the eleventh individual in the case, was anticipated to face separate charges.Although it was unclear whether Mr. Sanchez was involved in the investigation, officials said at a news conference on Monday night that someone connected to it had been charged with conspiracy and obstruction of justice for trying to hide and destroy evidence.
