Multiple people, including a state trooper, were injured in a shooting that ended at a church in Kentucky on Sunday, the authorities said.
The shooter, who was not immediately identified, was dead, officials said.
The shooter fired on a trooper and then fled, ending up at the Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington, Ky., Sherry H. Bray, a spokeswoman for the Kentucky State Police, said in a statement.
She said there were “multiple victims at the church” and that emergency responders were treating people at the scene.
The State Police said there was a “trooper-involved shooting” around 11:35 a.m. local time. It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.
The Lexington police said the trooper was shot at Terminal Drive at Blue Grass Airport and that the two shootings were connected. The trooper was in stable condition,
the police said
.
Officials said, however, that the Terminal Drive shooting was unrelated to the airport.
An airport spokeswoman said earlier that “an incident” occurred on a roadway on airport property that caused the roadway and terminal to be temporarily closed.
Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky
said on Sunday
that he was “aware of a series of incidents in Lexington around one suspect, including a trooper-involved shooting and an additional shooting at Richmond Road Baptist Church with multiple injuries.”
Kasey Darling, general manager of Boonedogs Bar and Restaurant, which is near the church, said there was a heavy police presence in the area on Sunday afternoon.
“One employee had told me that they heard some shooting when it was all happening,” said Mr. Darling, who described the area as rural with a lot of farmland.
