Following heavy storms that disrupted travel and grounded regional airports on Sunday, the Washington, D.C. area is now bracing for a stretch of extreme heat through the final days of July.
High Temperatures and Dangerous Heat Index
The severe thunderstorms have passed, but intense heat is settling in. On Monday, temperatures across the region are expected to climb into the 90s, with heat index values peaking in the low 100s, according to 7News First Alert Senior Meteorologist Brian van de Graaff. Residents are urged to take precautions by staying hydrated and avoiding extended time outdoors during peak heat hours.
Extreme Heat Alert Remains in Effect
An extreme heat alert issued by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser over the weekend will remain in effect until Thursday at 8 a.m. In response, the city has opened cooling centers to provide relief from the heat. Locations of the nearest cooling centers can be found online through official D.C. government channels.
Even Hotter Days Ahead
Tuesday is expected to bring even more intense heat, with temperatures soaring into the mid-90s. Factoring in the humidity, the heat index could climb to 105 degrees or higher. Heat advisories from the National Weather Service are likely. Overnight lows may also remain uncomfortably warm, feeling like 80 degrees or more.
Wednesday will mark the final day of the current heat wave, with high temperatures reaching the mid to upper 90s. Once again, the heat index is forecast to exceed 105 degrees, prompting continued advisories and health warnings.
Safety Tips During Extreme Heat
Authorities are reminding residents to take the following precautions:
- Drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty
- Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors with air conditioning
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day
- Check on elderly neighbors, young children, and those with medical conditions
- Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles
With temperatures staying dangerously high through midweek, public health officials emphasize the importance of vigilance and preparation. Stay updated with local forecasts and take full advantage of cooling centers if needed.
