Weather Alerts Issued as Heat, Storms, and Flooding Threaten the Tri-State

Due to heat, storms, and flooding, the CBS News New York First Alert Weather Team has issued First Alert Weather Days until the conclusion of the work week.

Wednesday brings high temperatures and humidity, as well as a storm threat, followed by a flood hazard on Thursday and Friday.

  • A heat advisory is in force for almost the entire area until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
  • An excessive heat warning is in force for northeastern New Jersey until 8 p.m. Wednesday.
  • An air quality alert remains in force for all areas excluding the upper Hudson Valley until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

Tuesday was the second day of the current heatwave, and it set yet another record, with temperatures hitting the century level at various locations, including Newark and LaGuardia Airport. Warm and muggy conditions will linger Tuesday night, with lows mostly ranging from 70 to 80 degrees.

Those hoping to catch a glimpse of the double meteor shower Tuesday night are in luck. Sky conditions should be ideal for witnessing the Alpha Capricornids and Southern Delta Aquariids in the Tri-State Area. Two meteor showers occurring at the same time is unusual.

Central Park may set a record for the highest minimum temperature on Wednesday morning, with a forecasted low of 80 matching the record high low of 80.

Wednesday promises to be another scorcher. High temperatures will again reach the mid to upper 90s, with heat indexes in the low 100s.

The majority of the day will be sunny, but by late afternoon, the risk of isolated severe thunderstorms returns. The most serious risk connected with severe storms would be damaging winds. These storms should subside after dusk.

The greatest fear, however, is the potential of devastating rains that are expected on Thursday. While the likelihood of severe thunderstorms is low, forecast models predict that rounds of persistent heavy rain and thunderstorms will develop across the region, potentially resulting in 2-4 inches of rain.
