For Some Republicans, Trump’s Shift on Epstein Is Just the Latest Breach

One of President Trump’s most fervent supporters in Congress has long been Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a right-wing Republican from Georgia who originally became interested in politics through the QAnon conspiracy theory.

However, she has a lot to say about her favorite president these days, especially his turnabout on disclosing the full details of the Jeffrey Epstein case.

When the Justice Department stated that no more disclosures would be appropriate or warranted regarding the disgraced financier who passed away in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges, Ms. Greene said in an interview that it’s a complete reversal of what was previously said and that people simply aren’t willing to accept it.

On Capitol Hill, it was the most recent outburst of annoyance from Mr. Trump’s hard-right supporters. There are indications that Mr. Trump’s political alliance may be eroding after a six-month honeymoon during which the divided Republican Party has largely remained together by blind loyalty to the president.

Ms. Greene and other conservative Republicans have attacked the administration’s aggressive approach to Iran, the president’s reversal of his support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, and the Justice Department’s change of direction on the Epstein case in recent weeks. They contend that Mr. Trump has deceived the people who elected him on every subject.

Regarding the decision to withhold additional information regarding Mr. Epstein, Ms. Greene stated, “I don’t accept it, and I don’t think anyone else should accept it.” The fact that common people are frequently imprisoned for making mistakes and committing crimes, while the wealthy and influential elites manage to get away with it, strikes me as a kick in the gut.
