Will Conspiracy Theorists Cultivated by Trump Turn on Him Over Epstein?

President Trump has become entangled in the most perplexing conspiracy theory after years of disseminating petty ones for his own political advantage.

In relation to Jeffrey Epstein’s life and death, he and his attorney general have been saying and doing—or rather, not doing—things that have caused the political movement he founded to erupt in righteous rage for more than a week.

Trump continues to order his followers to put aside their obsession with the disgraced banker and registered sex offender. Many of his fans, however, find it hard to accept the lackluster conclusion reached by the Department of Justice a week ago, which essentially stated that there was nothing to see here, people.

By the end of the week, a rabble of conspiracists who had been nurtured by Mr. Trump for years began to openly rebel against him.

The consequence is putting the president’s authority over his most devoted supporters to the test. These supporters have always trusted him and thought that if they put Mr. Trump back in office, they would discover a great deal more about the Epstein story.

The nature of the insurrection was breathtaking, but it is far too early to tell what it will signify or whether and when it will erupt. The political movement that sparked and exploded around a conspiracy theory about Barack Obama’s birthplace was crucial to Mr. Trump’s electoral ascent, cannibalizing the mother of all contemporary conspiracy theories. It was like a M bius strip of mistrust and paranoia.
