Supreme Court Clears the Way for Trump’s Cuts to the Education Department

On Monday, the Supreme Court upheld the Trump administration’s right to fire over a thousand employees from the Education Department.

President Trump’s attempts to drastically reduce the federal government’s involvement in the country’s schools may be aided by the directive, which represents a major win for the administration.

More than 1,300 employees will be let go by the Trump administration, essentially dismantling the department that oversees student achievement, administers federal student loans, and enforces civil rights laws in schools.

At the start of the year, the Education Department employed over 4,000 people. Additionally, the administration gave staff the option to resign and fired a few probationary personnel. The Education Department’s workforce will be almost half as large overall following the layoffs as it was prior to Mr. Trump’s return to office.

The justices’ decision amounts to an extension of presidential authority, enabling Mr. Trump to effectively abolish a congressionally established government agency without the participation of lawmakers.

It follows a ruling by the court last week that allowed the Trump administration to proceed with eliminating thousands of jobs in several government agencies, such as the Treasury, State, and Housing and Urban Development Departments.
