INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A massive nationwide auto theft investigation is underway after IMPD detectives located 12 stolen luxury vehicles worth over $1 million at a property on Indianapolis’ near east side.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers from the Auto Theft Unit were alerted by Massachusetts State Police regarding a vehicle tied to an ongoing case. That vehicle was tracked to the 1000 block of S. Keystone Avenue on Monday.
What Happened
IMPD said that once officers arrived at the location, they didn’t just find one vehicle—they found 12 stolen vehicles from multiple states. The total estimated value of the vehicles is approximately $1,022,000.
“That’s when we located not only one vehicle, but 12 stolen vehicles,” said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson.
The recovered vehicles came from across the country, including Georgia, New Jersey, Illinois, Florida, and Indiana. Among the stolen cars were luxury models from Rolls-Royce, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Toyota, and Cadillac.
Some of the notable recoveries included:
- 2020 Rolls Royce Ghost – Stolen from Fort Lauderdale, FL
- 2025 Mercedes GLE SUV – Stolen from Miami-Dade
- 2023 Cadillac Escalade – Reported stolen in Atlanta
- 2022 BMW X7 – Traced to New Jersey
- Multiple Lexus and Toyota Highlander models
Three of the vehicles were also reported stolen locally in Indianapolis and Sheridan.
Ongoing Investigation
Despite the discovery, no arrests have been made, and the salvage lot had no visible signage identifying its owner. Only “no trespassing” signs were posted.
“This investigation is going to take a while. This is the start, honestly,” said Thompson.
Auto Theft Trends and Prevention
In recent years, IMPD has seen a surge in auto thefts, especially among Hyundais and Kias. At one point, thefts had increased by 38% in Indianapolis. However, this year, that number has dropped by 20%, according to police.
Thompson credited the drop to community cooperation and ongoing police efforts.
To prevent further thefts, IMPD urges residents to:
- Park in well-lit areas
- Never leave the car running unattended
- Lock doors and windows
- Install a tracking device
- Consult your dealer for anti-theft upgrades
“We want to remind the public to do everything you can to keep your car safe and in your possession,” Thompson added.
