Ms. Paxton filed the divorce petition in Collin County on Thursday morning, citing the respondent’s adultery and the couple’s inability to live together as spouses since June 2024 as grounds for divorce.
In a similar social media post, Mr. Paxton stated that the couple had made the decision to begin a new chapter in their lives and implied that the breakup was caused by the demands of public life and innumerable political attacks.
“At this time, I ask for your prayers and privacy,” Mr. Paxton stated.
Texas Republican Party, where the couple has been together for years and where Mr. Paxton’s primary challenge to US Senator John Cornyn has already created major rifts ahead of the 2026 midterm campaign, might be rocked by the disclosure of the divorce petition.
After years of courting the far right of the Republican Party, Mr. Paxton has been outperforming the incumbent in public polls and has made a concerted effort to identify himself with President Trump and his followers.
In response, Democrats have seized the opportunity to run for the seat in the hopes that they will be able to defeat Mr. Paxton more easily than Mr. Cornyn in a general election when Republicans are struggling.
