by McDowell County, NC — Three people and their pets were rescued Friday after powerful thunderstorms triggered flash flooding in parts of western North Carolina, inundating roads and damaging campsites.
Heavy Rains Lead to Dangerous Conditions
According to McDowell County Emergency Services, storms dumped up to six inches of rain in localized areas Friday evening, overwhelming creeks and streams and quickly creating hazardous flood conditions.
Crews worked swiftly to respond to multiple emergencies throughout McDowell County. The most serious incident occurred on Owl Hollow Road, where three residents and their pets had to be pulled from rising waters.
Campground Suffers Damage, but No Injuries
Responders also assisted at the Spacious Skies Campground, where water from North Muddy Creek flooded the site, damaging several campers and a vehicle. Authorities confirmed that everyone at the campground was safely accounted for, and no injuries were reported.
Another flash flood report came from Young’s Fork near Rutherford Road in Marion, where rapidly rising waters prompted more emergency response efforts.
Emergency Services Praise Quick Action
“We are grateful for the rapid response by all emergency agencies on Friday night,” said Emergency Services Director Will Kehler. “We are very fortunate that no injuries occurred as a result of this flash flooding that quickly developed south of Marion.”
Officials are continuing to monitor flood-prone zones as rain remains in the forecast for parts of the region.
