31 Workers Rescued From Tunnel That Collapsed in Los Angeles

According to officials, 31 people were rescued after being trapped inside a Los Angeles industrial tunnel that collapsed on Wednesday night.

The collapse occurred almost five miles from the tunnel’s sole access point, but all tunnel workers were able to escape safely and no serious injuries were reported, according to Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts spokesperson Michael Chee.

More than 100 rescue personnel have been sent to the scene in the Wilmington region of the city, which is roughly 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The tunnel was a component of the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts’ $630 million wastewater management project, which is anticipated to be finished in 2027.

On its website, the project’s principal contractor, FlatironDragados, stated that the seven-mile tunnel will enable repairs to outdated infrastructure elsewhere and carry water from a treatment plant to the Pacific Ocean.

On social media, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that she was receiving updates on the situation on the ground.

This tale is still in progress and will be updated.
