Chicago, Illinois — Chicago police are warning residents and visitors about a string of scams and robberies unfolding in the River North neighborhood, where suspects are allegedly tricking people into handing over their phones before stealing money through mobile payment apps.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the incidents have primarily occurred during early morning hours, targeting people walking alone in a busy nightlife area.
How the Scam Works
Investigators say groups of three to eight men approach victims and ask for a donation or request that the person “follow” them on social media, often Instagram.
Once the victim hands over their phone, suspects allegedly:
- Transfer money to themselves using Zelle or Apple Pay
- Refuse to return the device
- Use force or intimidation if the victim resists
In at least one reported incident, police say a victim was led toward a larger group, where their property was taken by force.
Incidents Concentrated on North Dearborn Street
Police say the reported incidents all occurred in the 600 block of North Dearborn Street, a well-traveled area of River North. The following times and dates have been confirmed:
- Around 3 a.m. on December 13
- Around 3:30 a.m. on December 20
- Around 5 a.m. on December 20
- Around 3:30 a.m. on December 21
The repeated timing suggests suspects may be targeting late-night and early-morning foot traffic, when people may be more distracted or less alert.
Suspect Descriptions
Authorities describe the suspects as:
- Three to eight Black men
- Between 20 and 30 years old
- Wearing dark-colored clothing
Police believe the group operates together and may be actively seeking additional victims in the area.
Safety Tips From Police
Chicago police are urging the public to take precautions, especially when walking in nightlife districts late at night:
- Do not hand your phone to strangers, even briefly
- Avoid engaging with people requesting donations or social media interactions
- Be aware of your surroundings, particularly in groups
- Trust your instincts and leave the area if something feels off
Anyone who believes they have been targeted or followed is encouraged to move to a well-lit, populated area and contact police immediately.
