Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Authorities are investigating suspicious circumstances after a man and three dogs were found dead inside a home in East Germantown on Friday evening, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.
Police say the discovery was made after the man’s wife returned home from work and found him unresponsive, prompting an emergency call that led officers to a troubling scene.
Police respond to East Germantown residence
Officers were dispatched to a home on the 1900 block of Medary Street shortly after 6:30 p.m. following a report of an unresponsive male, said Christopher Bradshaw.
When officers entered the residence, they discovered three dogs that had been shot and a man lying on the floor. Police also observed a dog bite wound on the man’s ankle, raising further questions about what unfolded inside the home.
Wife finds husband unconscious
Captain Bradshaw told local media that the man’s wife had come home from work and found her husband unconscious inside the house. Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.
At this stage of the investigation, police have not released the man’s identity, pending family notification.
Cause of death remains unclear
Investigators say they do not yet know who shot the dogs or how the man died. While no official cause of death has been determined, authorities emphasized that the circumstances are considered suspicious.
Police have not confirmed whether the man’s death is believed to be related to the gunshots that killed the dogs or to the dog bite found on his ankle.
An autopsy is expected to provide additional clarity.
Fourth dog found alive inside bathroom
In addition to the deceased animals, officers located a fourth dog alive inside a bathroom in the home.
The dog was taken into custody by ACCT Philly, which handles animal welfare cases across the city. Officials did not immediately release details about the dog’s condition.
