Kamala Harris made a notable pivot recently, showering Gen Z with some unexpected love in a public statement. During a speech, the Vice President expressed her warm feelings toward the younger generation, saying, “I love Gen Z because we have Gen Zs in our lives… I know I love Gen Z.”
Previously, she said GenZ makes ‘really bad decisions’ and is ‘stupid’, adding, “That’s why we put them in dormitories and they have a resident assistant.”
Her comment was actually a backhanded slap against Gen Z, by the tone of her voice and laughter.
But this new-found affection stands in sharp contrast to her less than flattering remarks back in 2015, when she didn’t hold back her opinions about 18-to-24-year-olds.
While serving as California’s Attorney General, Harris famously said, “What else do we know about this population 18 through 24? They are stupid. That is why we put them in dormitories and they have a resident assistant. They make really bad decisions.” Ouch. Harris wasn’t exactly giving out participation trophies back then.
To be fair, a lot has changed since 2015. Back then, TikTok wasn’t even a thing, and the idea of binge-watching 30-second videos of cat fails wasn’t a universally shared generational experience. Maybe the Vice President has had a change of heart after spending more time around Zoomers or learning about their activism around climate change and social justice. Or, she’s just noticed how many TikTok users are extremely into politics these days.
Regardless of what sparked the 180, her declaration of love for Gen Z is a sign that Harris is paying attention to the generation that’s taking over the internet—and maybe voting booths, too. If there’s one thing Gen Z can’t resist, it’s a redemption arc, and it looks like Harris is working on hers.
