New York Attorney General James Vows Continued Legal Fight Against Trump in Fiery Speech
NEW YORK— New York Attorney General Letitia James delivered a pointed speech on Wednesday, underscoring her commitment to pursuing accountability against former President Donald Trump and his associates in the wake of a substantial court ruling in a civil fraud case. Speaking forcefully, James emphasized her office’s dedication to upholding the rule of law amid what she described as “egregious” and “intentional” financial misconduct.
“For months because we’ve been here before,” James said, asserting that the state has faced similar challenges in the past. “We faced this challenge before and we use the rule of law to fight back. … As the attorney general of this great state, it’s my job to protect and defend the rights of New Yorkers and the rule of law. And I will not shrink from that responsibility.”
The remarks followed a court decision ordering Trump, his sons, and senior executives of the Trump Organization to pay $463 million in disgorgement, plus additional interest, in penalties stemming from the lawsuit. The ruling also placed new restrictions on Trump and his associates, barring them from serving as officers in any New York company for a set period and instituting enhanced oversight over the Trump Organization’s financial operations.
James described the former president’s actions as a “long-running fraud” intended to deceive financial institutions and enrich himself and his family. “Donald Trump engaged in deceptive business practices and tremendous fraud,” she said. “He may have authored The Art of the Deal, but he perfected The Art of the Steal.”
The judge’s decision mandates the appointment of an independent compliance director for the Trump Organization and continuation of an external monitor to oversee its financial transactions. The ruling further prohibits Trump and his companies from applying for loans from New York banks for three years.
James also outlined the broader implications of the ruling, emphasizing the impact of white-collar financial crimes on everyday Americans. “White-collar financial fraud is not a victimless crime,” she said. “When the powerful break the law and take more than their fair share, there are fewer resources available for working people, small businesses, and families.”
The attorney general credited her team for their work in the case, describing the investigation as critical to holding powerful individuals accountable. “The scale and the scope of Donald Trump’s fraud is staggering, and so too is his ego and his belief that the rules do not apply to him,” she said. “Today we are holding Donald Trump accountable … because there cannot be different rules for different people in this country, and former presidents are no exception.”
The ruling is the latest development in a series of legal challenges facing Trump, who is also contending with multiple criminal indictments. Attorney General James, who has been vocal in her criticisms of Trump throughout the investigation, reaffirmed her stance that the legal process will continue to ensure compliance and fairness within New York’s financial system.
Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, and his legal team has announced plans to appeal the court’s decision, claiming political bias in the proceedings. Meanwhile, Trump is expected to address the ruling in a forthcoming statement from his residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
