– Authorities in the United States are praising the Mexican Navy who scored a major win in its ongoing fight against drug trafficking on Tuesday, seizing nearly 8,000 pounds of cocaine from a semi-submersible “narco sub” off the Pacific coast. In an operation reminiscent of a high-stakes action film, a Navy aircraft spotted the suspicious vessel approximately 150 miles southeast of Acapulco, Guerrero, prompting an interception by a nearby Navy ship.

As the Navy ship closed in, officers found the semi-submersible vessel—a fast-moving “go-fast” boat powered by two outboard motors—carrying nine crew members.

The crew, including six foreign nationals whose nationalities were not disclosed, was immediately detained. Onboard, Navy personnel discovered a massive haul of cocaine: 102 tightly packed packages weighing approximately 3,600 kg, or around 7,937 pounds.

A String of Successes: Mexican Navy’s Push Against Drug Smugglers

This seizure adds to a string of recent successes for the Mexican Navy, which has escalated its crackdown on Pacific drug routes in response to increased trafficking activity. Just weeks earlier, the Navy reported confiscating over 8.3 tons of drugs from six separate vessels in the same waters.

The numbers are telling; under the current administration, the Mexican Navy has seized over 15,000 kg—approximately 33,000 pounds—of drugs at sea, underscoring the scale of the battle against powerful trafficking networks.

Mexican Navy is Making Waves Against Trafficking

The interception is part of an ongoing campaign to disrupt drug smuggling along the Pacific, a known corridor for drug traffickers attempting to evade law enforcement. With traffickers increasingly turning to semi-submersible vessels and other advanced methods to move large quantities of narcotics, the Navy’s role in securing Mexico’s maritime borders remains crucial.

As this latest operation shows, the Mexican Navy is not only keeping a sharp eye on its waters but is also adapting quickly to the evolving tactics of traffickers. For the team who seized nearly 8,000 pounds of illegal cargo, it’s a signal that while the battle is tough, their watchful efforts are making waves in the fight against trafficking.
