NASHVILLE, TN
– A Nashville man, previously released on bond following domestic violence arrests, is now facing federal charges after allegedly assaulting a store employee and setting a fire with her unconscious body left behind in the building. The disturbing case raises fresh questions over bond policies and public safety.
Pardrae Gooch, 38, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges including robbery affecting interstate commerce, using fire to commit a felony, and arson causing property damage, according to a statement released Thursday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee.
A Frightening Attack and a Desperate Escape
The alleged incident occurred on May 29 at S. Fashion Clothing Store in South Nashville, where court records reveal Gooch reportedly entered the store and attacked the only employee on site. According to documents, Gooch allegedly choked the woman until she lost consciousness, struck her repeatedly, and moved her to the bathroom at the back of the store.
In the bathroom, Gooch allegedly struggled with the woman over her cell phone, hitting her again before taking her phone and car keys. Prosecutors say he then ignited a pile of clothing in the bathroom, intending to burn down the store with the woman inside, before fleeing the scene in her vehicle.
Emergency Response and Swift Action
The Metro Nashville police and fire departments were alerted by witnesses who called 911. Emergency responders arrived promptly, extinguished the flames, and transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for a cranial fracture and other serious injuries.
Due to the damage, the store was temporarily closed for several days following the incident.
Prior Arrests and Possible Penalties
Officials report that Gooch was out on bond for prior domestic violence charges involving two separate women. Just eight days before this alleged attack, he had been arrested for violating an order of protection connected to one of these cases.
If found guilty on all charges, Gooch could face a minimum prison sentence of 15 years, with a potential maximum of 20 years, and fines up to $250,000.
