MONROE COUNTY, NY

– A tour bus carrying passengers to Niagara Falls overturned early Thursday morning on a New York highway, injuring 28 people, including at least one child, authorities reported. The accident unfolded on Interstate 490 near Union Street in Chili, just outside Rochester, sparking a large emergency response and shutting down traffic in the westbound lanes.

Major Emergency Response as 28 Passengers Injured

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said the bus had departed from New York City around midnight. According to EMS Chief Frank Manzo, the scene quickly escalated as 18 ambulances were dispatched to assist.

Local hospitals were prepared to receive patients as Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter confirmed that all four area hospitals admitted individuals from the crash. “The injured included at least one person in critical condition,” Baxter noted.

Difficult Rescue Amid Devastating Crash Scene

Sheriff Baxter explained that investigators are now reconstructing the crash to understand what led to the incident. “It did roll on its side, turn 180 degrees in reverse, and was laid on its side when we arrived on the scene, so getting people off the bus was a difficult task,” Baxter stated.

He added, “It was surreal; it was things you trained for, but something you don’t expect to see in real life.”

Investigation Launched, Driver Cooperating with Authorities

Only the tour bus was involved in the accident, and so far, no other vehicles or factors have been linked to the incident. Although a criminal investigation is underway “to be thorough,” the sheriff’s office emphasized that no evidence of criminal behavior has surfaced at this time.

Chief Deputy Michael Fowler, speaking from the scene, reported that initial assessments did not indicate drugs or alcohol played a role. He added that the driver is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Sheriff Baxter closed his comments with a message of support: “Our sympathy to the families that are going through a very terrible time right now.”
