WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Three World War II veterans, each nearly a century old, were honored with a warm reception in Wall Township on Monday before sharing their stories with local elementary students. Veterans Fred Nungesser, 99, of the 84th Infantry Division, John Wardell, 99, of the 2nd Ranger Battalion, and Matt Yacovino, 100, a former U.S. Navy PBY crewman, visited the Wall Police WWII Rockefeller Memorial and then met with 4th and 5th-grade students at Allenwood Elementary School.
After a tribute at the memorial, the veterans were escorted to the school, where they captivated students with stories of their service during the war and their recent journey back to Europe with the Best Defense Foundation, an organization dedicated to honoring veterans by facilitating return visits to historic battle sites.
“These heroes spoke about their service, their recent journey back to Europe, and the importance of honoring our past to inspire our future,” Wall Township Police shared on social media. The veterans recounted their experiences in uniform and discussed the lessons they learned, emphasizing the value of resilience, courage, and remembrance.
The students posed thoughtful questions, gaining insight into a pivotal time in history directly from those who lived through it. For the young audience, it was a rare opportunity to learn about World War II from veterans who played a part in shaping its outcome, fostering a personal connection to the stories they often encounter only in textbooks.
The event underscored the community’s commitment to remembering the contributions and sacrifices of those who served. Wall Township Police extended their gratitude to the veterans, recognizing their bravery and sacrifices in protecting American freedoms.
