Strong Winds and Dry Conditions Heighten Fire Alert Status Across New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey residents are being warned of heightened fire risks Tuesday due to a combination of strong winds and dry conditions, according to the National Weather Service. The agency issued a Special Weather Statement early Tuesday morning, cautioning that the state’s fire alert status is at risk of escalation as high winds and low humidity create conditions conducive to rapid fire spread.

The alert, which covers most of New Jersey as well as parts of Delaware and Maryland, warns of northwest winds ranging from 10 to 20 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 35 miles per hour. These wind speeds, combined with relative humidity levels expected to drop to 30-40% during the afternoon, create an environment in which fires can ignite and spread quickly.

“There is an increased risk for fire spread through early this evening,” the weather service advised, urging caution for any activities involving open flames or potential ignition sources. Authorities warned that fires that do ignite under these conditions could become difficult to control, posing a significant hazard to dry, forested areas.

In response to the heightened fire danger, officials have discouraged outdoor burning throughout the day and are urging residents to properly extinguish any potential ignition sources, including cigarette butts and outdoor equipment. Burn restrictions and bans are already in effect in some parts of the state, as local agencies work to minimize the risk of wildfires.

The dry, windy conditions follow a cold front that moved through the region, creating a fire-prone environment that is expected to persist through the evening. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has advised residents to stay informed on local burn restrictions and to avoid any outdoor activities that could inadvertently start fires.
