One dead in fiery crash at Algon Avenue and Rhawn Street

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A fatal collision early Saturday morning at the intersection of Algon Avenue and Rhawn Street in the city’s 7th District claimed the life of a man in his 30s, according to police reports.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:12 a.m. when the driver of a gold Honda Accord, traveling westbound on Rhawn Street, ran a red light. A 2019 blue Nissan, operated by a 29-year-old woman heading northbound on Algon Avenue with a green light, struck the Honda on the driver’s side.

The force of the impact caused the Honda to collide with a pole before catching fire, authorities said. The male driver of the Honda was transported by Medic 48 to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:00 a.m.

Police noted that while the Nissan was the striking vehicle, the Honda driver caused the crash by disregarding the red light.

The Crash Investigation Division is leading the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances of the collision.
