HUGE SUR For the first time in almost 60 years, a $100 million property in Big Sur that was originally owned by the Pfeiffer family, renowned early European settlers, is up for sale.
According to Tim Allen, a listing agent with the Carmel-by-the-Sea/Junipero office of Coldwell Banker Realty in Northern California, Cyril Chappellet, a former Lockheed executive, last bought the Heart of Rancho Rico, which is situated at 47320 Highway 1 and 47324 Highway 1, in 1965. Since then, his granddaughters C. Blake, Michele, and Kira Forrest have been selling the 150-acre plot of land that has remained in the family.
The property has a private beach with views of the Santa Lucia Mountains and a Pacific Ocean coastline. It is situated around 30 miles south of Carmel and is walkable from the Big Sur Community. It is one of numerous parcels that Chappallet previously owned.
According to a news release from one of the owners, C. Blake Forrest, “over the past 60 years, four generations of our family have spent time on this property.” Our mother got the estate from our grandfather, Cyril Chappellet, who bought it in 1965. I spent most of my childhood summers at the ranch, as he called it, with my sisters Michele and Kira.
Three distinct residences, well-kept gardens, fruit orchards, outdoor living areas, plenty of space for raising cattle and poultry, and a private road that leads to the shoreline and private beaches are all features of the Heart of Rancho Rico family compound.
“My siblings and I raised our own families there, and we had innumerable family get-togethers for 60 years,” Forrest recalled. We wish that the property’s next owners would cherish it, enjoy it with their family, and maintain its beauty for future generations.
The property includes a contemporary ranch-style main home that was constructed in the late 1940s and has 3,750 square feet of living space with four bedrooms, all of which are en suite with full bathrooms, a second partial bathroom, and three fireplaces. There are lovely grounds, a two-car garage, and an enclosed loggia outside. The Pacific Ocean, beaches, shoreline, and mountains are all visible from the residence.
A two-story ranch house with four bedrooms, two complete bathrooms, and 2,500 square feet of living area was also constructed in 1995. This 2001 garden home features 1,960 square feet of living area, three bedrooms, two complete bathrooms, and a fireplace.
The main meadow, located roughly 1,000 feet above the shoreline, is reached via a gateway to a well-kept road that travels past redwood, oak, bay, and madrone trees. The property features a ranch orchard with 80 deciduous, citrus, avocado, and nut trees, fresh spring water that supplies a portion of the property and runs into two private beaches below, and 360-degree vistas of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Lucia Mountains.
Allen stated in the release that Heart of Rancho Rico is a timeless and incomparable property with expansive vistas of the Pacific Ocean from the shoreline to the north and roughly 80 viewable miles to the south. This property’s history resonates with many of the area’s longtime residents. With seclusion, tranquility, and countless opportunities to explore the 150 acres of coastal splendor, it offers the quintessential Big Sur lifestyle.
