Virginia Snowfall Alert: Multiple Days of Snow Expected Along I-77 This Week

Blacksburg, Virginia A powerful cold front is expected to approach Thursday afternoon, causing a major weather shift across southwest Virginia. Through Saturday morning, residents at higher elevations and along I-77 should brace themselves for dangerous travel conditions, including strong winds and a lot of snow.

The Blacksburg National Weather Service predicts that snow will build up over a few days, possibly reaching four inches in some places. Road conditions will become slick and visibility will be reduced as temperatures drop precipitously, reaching the 20s at night. It is advised that travelers make advance plans, drive carefully, and keep an eye on local weather reports.

Particularly in the higher areas close to Bluefield and Wytheville, the snow will start out as light showers on Thursday night and becoming heavier on Friday. In addition to the possibility of hazardous traffic conditions, winds could reach gusts of up to 34 mph. It is anticipated that areas around I-77 and portions of I-81 would be most affected.

With partly clear skies on Saturday, there will be a small reprieve, but the temperature will still be in the mid-40s. With a high of about 55 degrees and largely sunny skies, Sunday is predicted to be a little warmer.

The long forecast calls for persistently low temperatures, which will increase the chance of snow and ice on less-traveled routes and in places with shadow. In order to prevent ice buildup, residents are advised to stock up on necessities, avoid needless travel during periods of heavy snowfall, and clear sidewalks.
