Last week, a SCA utility worker in Lancaster County, South Carolina, discovered skeletal remains strewn around a forested region. Now, investigators are putting in endless effort to identify the bones and determine the cause of the death, which they believe occurred years ago.
Bones Scattered Over 100-Yard Area
The bones were found on Nov. 13 in a forested area off Bethel Road, in the southwest region of Lancaster County, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. When deputies and detectives got to the location, they discovered bones and other pieces of evidence strewn over about 100 yards. Following the recovery of multiple bones and other pieces of evidence, the search was halted on Monday.
After being promptly verified as human, the bones were delivered to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, where they are currently being examined by a forensic anthropologist. The cause and method of death, as well as the identity of the dead, are still unknown.
The sheriff’s office assured the public in a statement that there is no known threat in the region, stating that it is clear that the person’s death was not recent and that the bones have been exposed to the elements for a length of time probably measured in years.
Multi-Agency Efforts Aim to Solve the Mystery
Sheriff Barry Faile stressed that the inquiry was a team effort. According to Faile, Foothills Search & Rescue, the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office, the sheriff’s office, and the Richland County Coroner’s Office’s Forensic Anthropology Division are all involved in this team investigation. “I hope the remains analysis will provide important information,” he said.
“As a first step in figuring out when, where, and how the person died, we hope the anthropologist and the coroner’s examination of the remains will yield information leading to the identity of this person,” he said.
Public Assistance Needed to Crack the Case
Anyone with information on the case is being urged to come forward by law enforcement. Uncovering this riddle may depend on even the smallest information. Residents are urged to get in touch with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office or provide anonymous information.
Authorities are still dedicated to solving this case and obtaining answers. The remains found in this peaceful area of Lancaster County may eventually be solved by forensic evidence and public tips.
