Trenton, New Jersey. About 4,500 two-year-old rainbow trout, which average 14 to 18 inches in length, will be stocked in 18 designated lakes and ponds throughout the state on Monday, Nov. 25, and Tuesday, Nov. 26. New Jersey anglers are in for a treat.
Over 600,000 trout will be released throughout the state in 2024, with the winter stocking being the last of the year, according to the Fish and Wildlife Division of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The lakes and ponds used for stocking range in size from five to one hundred acres, and they offer shoreline access as well as boat launching facilities.
In order to provide fishermen the chance to begin casting lines right away, the DEP stated that all winter-stocked waters may be fished as soon as they are stocked.
Since its inception in 2000, the winter stocking program has moved several lakes to the fall stocking timetable in order to increase fishing chances prior to the formation of ice. The change gives fishermen more weeks to fish in warmer waters, even if ice fishing is prohibited in many of these waters.
Highlights of the stocking include Little Swartswood Lake (350 trout), Furnace Lake (360 trout), and Lake Aeroflex (370 trout). Additionally, well-known fishing locations like Silver Lake, Mt. Hope Pond, and Green Turtle Pond will be stocked.
The New Jersey DEP Fish and Wildlife website has a detailed list of stocking sites and trout numbers.
The goal of this seasonal stocking is to conclude another productive year of trout distribution while offering anglers a satisfying vacation fishing experience.
