Following his election victory, radio DJ Charlamagne Tha God encouraged Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Judge Juan Merchan to drop President-elect Donald Trump’s case on Wednesday.
Trump’s remaining legal actions should be postponed until his tenure ends in 2029, Bragg recommended Tuesday. On The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne disagreed and urged Bragg to abandon the case completely in light of Trump’s election victory.
Observe:
Please, New York City, just toss it all away. Remove it. Who are we trying to fool? Who are we trying to fool? Nothing will happen to Trump, and no one wants to live with the threat of his possible retaliation. The election was won by him alone. According to Charlamagne, it is what it is. Break up relationships, stop losing, and discard the case altogether. Hurry up. Hey everyone, who are we fooling? Seriously, who are you fooling?
And he might be more inclined to stay if you postpone it for four years, okay? He is the same one who advised his supporters to cast one more ballot since they would never have to do it again. Okay, wink, wink, he went on. All right? Hurry up.
On Tuesday, prosecutors stated that they would not object to a further postponement of Trump’s sentencing date, which is now set for November 26.
Jonathan Turley, a legal professor at George Washington University, slammed Bragg’s proposal on Tuesday, claiming it would likely help the court and the district attorney but not the US or justice.
I believe that leaving this issue unresolved for the entire four years of the administration is the worst conceivable outcome. You cannot have a local district attorney treat a sitting president like a freak on a leash, where he just is able to say that, I will finish this once you re out of office, Turley said. It gives the district attorney a monstrous status. Additionally, it leaves it up to this local judge to decide the US president’s final decision. Having that kind of unanswered question for the next four years is not good for the country or justice.
Trump was found guilty on 34 charges of falsifying business documents by a Manhattan jury in May. Merchanhaltedall deadlines in the case on Nov. 12 in response to Trump s election win, postponing his decision on the president-elect s motion to dismiss the verdict based on the Supreme Court s presidential immunityruling, which itissuedafter the verdict.
The People deeply respect the Office of the President, are mindful of the demands and obligations of the presidency and acknowledge that Defendant s inauguration will raise unprecedented legal questions, prosecutorswrote. We also deeply respect the fundamental role of the jury in our constitutional system.
According to the filing, there is currently no law that mandates the dismissal of a post-trial criminal proceeding that was started when the defendant was not immune from criminal prosecution and that was founded on unofficial conduct for which the defendant is likewise not immune because of a president’s temporary immunity from prosecution.
