New Jersey State Police seek tips in suspicious brush fire near ‘Big Rusty’ monument

New Jersey’s Hainesport.A mysterious brush fire that happened on November 18 close to the Big Rusty monument, a tall steel building situated along State Highway 38 in Hainesport Township, Burlington County, is being looked into by New Jersey State Police.

After receiving reports of the fire, which was promptly put out but left investigators questioning its cause, troopers arrived on the scene at around 4:39 p.m. The public is being asked to help authorities figure out what started the fire, and they are especially interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen the fire or noticed strange activity close to the monument.

The 40-foot-tall steel sculpture known as the Hainesport Steel Mast, or Big Rusty monument, was built in 1975 as a memorial to the region’s industrial past. The building’s rust-covered, weathered appearance has given it a moniker among locals and made it a noticeable aspect of the area. The monument is a local landmark and a representation of the township’s history, situated along a busy section of State Highway 38.

Over the years, Big Rusty has experienced numerous acts of vandalism despite its historical significance. Graffiti and attempts at structural damage have been among the incidents, which frequently cause locals and authorities to worry about protecting the monument. The current fire is another alarming incident in a pattern of attacks, as officials have responded to an increase in suspicious activities near the location in recent years.

Many people in the neighborhood have sentimental attachments to Big Rusty; some see it as a lasting reminder of Hainesport’s industrial history and a nod to the laborers who shaped the area. But because of its remote location away from the roadway, vandalism and other illegal conduct have been common there.

Although they are looking into every possibility, New Jersey State Police have not yet linked the brush fire to other vandalism instances. Residents are asked to call the NJSP Troop C Bordentown Station Detective Bureau at 609-298-1171 if they have any information regarding the fire. We accept anonymous tips.

As they try to ascertain whether the fire is connected to earlier damage that targeted the ancient landmark, authorities are investigating it as suspicious.
