WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, N.J. Commuters in New Jersey encountered major difficulties during the Friday morning rush hour due to a confluence of heavy traffic, flooding, and collisions that caused jams on the state’s roads.
According to traffic reports, all lanes had to be closed as of 7:39 a.m. due to flooding on the NJ 440 southbound approach to the southbound US 9/Garden State Parkway in Woodbridge Township. All lanes of NJ 15 southbound in Jefferson Township were also blocked by downed poles and wires; the incident was reported at 6:27 a.m.
Disruptions were also caused by several accidents. As of 7:41 a.m., two left lanes were blocked due to a collision on I-287 northbound near Exit 39 for NJ 10 in Hanover Township, and two center lanes were blocked due to a collision on US 1&9 northbound near Linden Airport in Linden as of 7:24 a.m. At 7:27 a.m., a debris spill on US 22 eastbound at Watchung’s Terrill Road blocked the left lane.
Numerous major roadways experienced significant traffic delays. Both the top and lower eastbound levels of the George Washington Bridge were delayed by 35 minutes, and the center and south tubes of the Lincoln Tunnel were delayed by 20 minutes apiece. Due to earlier bridge congestion, the New Jersey Turnpike experienced two-mile delays on both the local and express lanes heading north toward the George Washington Bridge.
Additionally, NJ 208 southbound, NJ 55 northbound, and NJ 42 northbound also experienced volume-related slowdowns. Depending on the location, these routes took anything from five to twenty minutes to travel.
Travel times for commuters traveling east on NJ 495 reached 15 to 20 minutes due to severe traffic between Pleasant Avenue in Weehawken and the New Jersey Turnpike in North Bergen. NJ 17 in Rochelle Park Township, NJ 21 in Newark, and Jersey City’s Pulaski Skyway northbound were other congested locations.
The difficulty of negotiating New Jersey’s roads during rush hour, especially when exacerbated by unfavorable circumstances and accidents, was highlighted by Friday’s morning commute.
