Gaithersburg man charged with negligent manslaughter in high-speed, alcohol-related crash

Gathersburg, Maryland. Agustin E. Jaramillo Lopez, 45, has been charged by the Montgomery County Department of Police with negligent manslaughter by automobile in connection with a July collision that claimed the life of Germantown resident Isaac Akomanyi, 39.

The crash happened on North Frederick Avenue close to Travis Avenue on the evening of July 20, 2024. Police claim that after Akomanyi’s 2016 Nissan Altima went onto the road from an adjacent parking lot, Jaramillo Lopez, operating a black 2022 Ram 1500 pickup truck, rear-ended the vehicle at an excessive speed.

Both cars left the road and collided into a tree due to the force of the impact. After being taken to a nearby hospital, Akomanyi passed away from his wounds. Jaramillo Lopez and a Nissan passenger were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the Collision Reconstruction Unit’s investigation, Jaramillo Lopez hit the Nissan at around 79.5 mph while driving at a maximum speed of 98.2 mph in a 40 mph zone. An hour after the collision, his blood alcohol level was also found to be 0.159, which is almost twice the legal limit.

As police work to hold careless and intoxicated drivers accountable, Jaramillo Lopez is now facing charges of negligent manslaughter by automobile and other connected offenses.
