OAKLAND COUNTY, MIA On Tuesday night, a strong explosion ripped through a condominium complex in Orion Township, Michigan, causing about 20 people to be displaced and two individuals to suffer significant injuries. According to officials, the explosion, which was most likely brought on by a gas leak, rocked the Keatington New Town complex, which is located roughly 40 miles north of Detroit.

The explosion on Waldon Road, between Baldwin and Joslyn roads, happened at around 6:20 p.m., according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Locals reported seeing debris strewn throughout the complex and hearing a loud boom.

Two Critically Injured, Residents Accounted For

At a news conference, Orion Township Fire Chief Ryan Allen disclosed that two individuals, a man and a woman in their 70s, were hospitalized after suffering severe burn injuries. Allen also mentioned that a few other residents suffered minor wounds. Two people were reportedly missing at first, but it was later determined that they were not at home when the explosion happened.

The explosion severely damaged nearby condominiums and totally demolished a four-unit building. In his description of the devastation, Township Supervisor Chris Barnett remarked, “It looks like something from a movie.” Barnett was thankful that more people weren’t gravely injured in spite of the mayhem.

Investigation and Cleanup Underway

Although they underlined that the investigation could take up to a week to finish, fire authorities think a gas leak may have caused the explosion. Allen stated that as teams continue to evaluate the site and strive to make the area safe, cleanup will take longer.

The local utility company, Consumers Energy, said its staff is prepared to help investigators as soon as the location is considered safe. Officials are assisting the relocated residents and making sure their urgent requirements are satisfied in the interim.

Authorities are grateful that the outcome wasn’t worse despite the significant damage and injuries. As investigators try to determine what caused this tragic incident, the community is now concentrating on recovery activities.
