Washington For attacking law enforcement during the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol that interfered with the certification of the 2020 presidential election results, a Texas man was sentenced on Thursday to 22 months in jail.
U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell sentenced Dustin Ray Williams, 33, of Brady, Texas. Williams was sentenced to three years of supervised release and required to pay $2,000 in restitution in addition to his jail time. On July 11, 2024, Williams entered a guilty plea to a felony charge of assault, resisting, or obstructing law enforcement.
On January 6, 2021, Williams entered restricted Capitol grounds, traveled to Washington, D.C., and attended a demonstration for former President Trump, according to court records. He shoved and struggled with police for around 30 seconds after pushing his way through the crowd on West Plaza to engage officers in a defensive line. After being repelled by officers using pepper spray, Williams went back to the police line, yelled threats, and stayed on Capitol property for two more hours.
Williams posted on Facebook about getting pepper sprayed and tear gassed, documenting his activities with a selfie video. He avoided the Capitol building itself, staying instead close to the Lower West Terrace Tunnel, where the police were greatly outnumbered. On August 1, 2023, the FBI detained him in Dallas.
With investigative support from the FBI’s San Antonio and Washington Field Offices, U.S. Capitol Police, and the Metropolitan Police Department, the case was prosecuted by the DOJ’s National Security Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
In the course of the ongoing investigation into the Capitol riot, which has led to charges against over 1,561 people in almost all 50 states, Williams was sentenced.
