Newport News man sentenced to over 17 years for drug trafficking and firearm possession




Newport News, Virginia.For possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a weapon in furtherance of drug trafficking, a 39-year-old Newport News man with a lengthy criminal history was sentenced on Friday to 17 years and six months in federal prison.

Law authorities held Jermaine Damon Outlaw on many pending criminal warrants after he was arrested on August 29, 2019, at a Best Western hotel in Newport News. A loaded illegal firearm, a telephone, $855 in cash, and 1.36 grams of cocaine were found by the officers. Outlaw’s frequent distribution of cocaine and other illegal substances was proven by investigators who examined text conversations on his phone.

According to court records, Outlaw is a career criminal who has been found guilty of at least 20 offenses, including assault and battery, malicious wounding, carrying a concealed weapon, unlawful wounding, possessing a firearm on school property, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Senior U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith imposed a heavy sentence because of his extensive criminal past.

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Jessica D. Aber commended law enforcement’s cooperation in apprehending Outlaw. The Newport News Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were in charge of the investigation.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter G. Osyf.
