Washington Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed an emergency motion to preserve federal records related to the ongoing investigation of former President Donald Trump after a paper shredding truck outside the Department of Justice headquarters sparked claims of possible document destruction.
In order to stop the destruction of records pertaining to special counsel Jack Smith’s inquiry, Paxton filed the request Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas’ Amarillo Division, requesting that the court grant a preservation or temporary restraining order. Citing the truck’s presence, the motion charges the DOJ with taking acts that would jeopardize the reliability of important evidence.
According to the application, Plaintiffs seek a preservation order because, given Defendants’ prior actions, it is an essential, modest, and enforceable precaution to guarantee that Defendants fulfill their legal duties and refrain from causing Plaintiffs irreversible injury. The complaint highlights the shredder truck’s purported risk and asserts that it poses major worries over the possible destruction of documents.
Pictures of the truck’s appearance went viral on social media, particularly by conservative watchdog group the Oversight Project, which emphasized the vehicle’s presence at the DOJ. The purpose of the truck has not been formally explained, and the DOJ has refrained from commenting on the claims.
Paxton’s legal actions related to federal investigations into Trump have escalated recently, as seen by the motion. This occurs as Republican-led states continue to challenge federal accountability and transparency, and DOJ’s handling of sensitive documents is under increased scrutiny.
