ABINGDON, MD.Following a string of car break-ins in Harford County, investigators credited drone technology with quickly identifying the suspects and apprehending two minors early Monday.
At 4:21 a.m., deputies from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office arrived at Deep Well Court in Abingdon in response to allegations of auto thefts. They discovered that 21 cars had been broken into and searched. Subsequent reports brought deputies to Doncaster Road in Joppa less than 30 minutes later, where witnesses reported seeing two black-clad suspects driving a black pickup truck out of the area.
When deputies found the truck on Falconer Road and tried to pull it over, the suspects abandoned the car and escaped on foot on Barksdale Road, which is off-road. Deputies found stolen credit cards, a Glock 9mm handgun, and other stolen goods inside the truck.
A drone was then used by the sheriff’s office to search the neighborhood. A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old suspect who were hiding in a densely forested location were promptly recognized by the drone. When deputies arrived, they captured the two without any problems.
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office noted in a statement that this case demonstrates how well our drone technology works to find suspects and protect the public. Residents are urged to secure their vehicles and report unusual activity, and efforts are underway to find more victims and recover stolen stuff.
