A Mother of Five Survived the Flood to Return to a Cabin in Ruins

On Friday, Jaque White, a mother of five, pulled down in her minivan near a debris pile beside the Guadalupe River to assess the damage. After calling her kids out of the car, she stepped out to examine the destruction and took a picture of it.

She called it our safe space, and she survived to tell the tale of how she managed to get all of her kids out of the little cabin close by where they had been living since her divorce three years prior just a week earlier. She is aware that the floods that occurred in Central Texas on the Fourth of July have been among the deadliest for children, killing over 120 people in total, including scores of girls from Camp Mystic. There are still no scores.

Ms. White remarked, “I can’t imagine what would have happened if I hadn’t evacuated on time.” My life revolves around my kids.

After a week, she believed it was time for the six-member family to make the solemn journey to a rural road in Kerr County, Texas, to see what remained. With hesitation, she entered their cabin and attempted to determine what could be saved. Her kids, who are five, seven, ten, eleven, and thirteen years old, ran after her and examined their broken toys, dolls, and athletic equipment.

Ms. White inhaled deeply. The majority of their clothing was gone, as was the furniture, which was now in the rubbish pile. The cabin smelled strongly of mold and had drifted about 20 feet from its moorings. “It will be a long time before we can come back here,” she remarked.
