Following his unintentional social media virality, an 84-year-old Dallas restaurant owner is finally receiving the recognition he deserves.
It was the American dream of Samad Afghanipour, the proprietor of Samad Café, who came from Iran nearly 40 years ago.
One-man show
Afghanipour’s kitchen has been a one-man operation for many years. Tucked away on Manor Way, the eatery is adjacent to a mechanic business that Afghanipour once owned.
You can smell the perfume of Persian spices in the air from the street where this store is located.
“Almost 37 years, I’ve been here,” Afghanipour stated on Wednesday. “And it’s fresh food. I make it right now in the morning at 7 in the morning, and I’m ready at 11:30 a.m., opening the door for customers…nice customers.”
Fame on social media
His recent social media success—he had over 13 million views on TikTok—has brought him dozens of new clients.
The film was uploaded to the internet by Samuel Olvera, a local content creator. When Olvera shared a point-of-view of him assisting the tiny business, it quickly gained popularity.
“I mean it’s very overwhelming, I’m sure it’s overwhelming for Samad as well,” Olvera stated. “I appreciate all the support and all the support everyone has shown to Samad.”
Following the release of the film, the restaurant’s Google page has a ton of reviews, business is booming, and community donations are coming in.
More than $3,200 was raised for Afghanipour through a crowdsourcing campaign. Afghanipour received the gifts from Olvera on Wednesday.
“I believe he wants to donate it all, and that’s amazing, like honestly it’s very inspiring as well,” Olvera stated.

Making a charitable donation
Afghanipour stated that he intends to donate those funds to a children’s charity. Due to the overwhelming amount of business and community support, Afghanipour called in his son, Amir Bagshahi, for backup.
“Now to see him finally get the notoriety he deserves, it’s great because his food really is wholesome, and nutritious, and from the heart,” Bagshahi stated.

Thankful for the blessing
Afghanipour considers his increased online celebrity a boon and is really appreciative of the momentum. He promised to enjoy this wave of kindness and love as long as it lasts.
“I’m glad after they get their food, and after they eat their food, they are happy and leave this place happy,” Afghanipour stated.
When asked how long he plans to keep doing this, he responded, “Still, I’m young, I’m happy, you know.”
