Known as “Make Amazon Pay Days,” the coordinated demonstrations seek to hold the online retailer responsible for alleged labor violations, environmental damage, and what organizers say are threats to democracy.
Around the world, unions, labor rights groups, and anti-poverty organizations are supporting the strikes.
According to Christy Hoffman, general secretary of UNI Global Union, one of the organizations organizing the strike, companies like Amazon cannot defeat the strength of workers standing together, no matter how much money they spend fighting us. Protests are scheduled in major cities and Amazon installations, and workers from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, India, Japan, Brazil, and other countries will take part.
In a statement, Amazon refuted the charges, claiming that the organizers’ statements were purposefully false and defending the company’s reputation. Eileen Hards, a representative for Amazon, stated that the company has created over 1.5 million positions worldwide and that it offers excellent chances, perks, and salary from day one.
International worker rallies against Amazon during the holidays have happened before. Over time, the number of similar protests has increased, indicating continued hostilities between the business and its employees.
Customers have not yet encountered any delays in delivery. Whether or if employees in the facilities in the New Jersey and New York areas are taking part in the action is yet unknown.
