Arson Investigation launched into cause of the fire that claimed two lives in Kearny




KEARNY, New Jersey. Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said a fire that ripped through a home on Hamilton Avenue early Friday morning claimed two lives.

At 56 Hamilton Avenue, the fire started just after midnight, and when firefighters arrived, they discovered that the house was completely engulfed in thick flames. Two victims with severe injuries were found inside during firefighting operations.

At 1:20 a.m., Martin Wilson, 61, was taken to University Hospital in Newark and declared deceased. After being transported to Clara Maass Medical Center, Mary Beth Guenther, 58, passed away from her wounds later that day, at 12 p.m.

According to an initial assessment, the home’s basement was where the fire started. Authorities do not now suspect foul play, although the cause has not been identified. With assistance from the Kearny Police Department and Kearny Fire Department, the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is looking into the incident.
