New Jersey’s Asbury Park.According to authorities, Andrea Laign, a well-liked local photographer, was critically ill at Jersey Shore University Medical Center after being stabbed without cause on Sunday, September 24.

Laign was stabbed several times by a man at around 2:30 p.m. when she was out on a stroll with a friend on the 500 block of Asbury Avenue, just four blocks from the boardwalk. Friends described Laign as a gifted artist and a beloved member of Asbury Park’s creative community. Travis A. Cavanaugh, 39, of Asbury Park, was taken into custody by police at the site.

He is being jailed at Monmouth County Jail on charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm.

Trinity Episcopal Church is located in the residential neighborhood where the attack took place. Authorities said the attack was completely unprovoked, but they have not revealed a motive.

In order to help pay for Laign’s living and medical costs during her protracted recuperation, her friends and supporters have launched a fundraiser. According to the campaign statement, which calls on the community to donate and spread the word, it is heartbreaking that this lovely, gifted, and joyful soul is the victim of such a brutal murder.

Residents of Asbury Park came together to support Laign as she battles to recover from her injuries after expressing astonishment and sadness at the tragedy.

According to a recent report, she is still recuperating at home:

For those who have been asking, a last update. As anticipated, Andrea’s recuperation will take a considerable amount of time, but she is a true rock star and is making progress.

Though she has seen your comments and received your amazing generosity of love, vibes, money, prayers, and cards, please continue to respect her need for seclusion and relaxation. Although I’m not shocked, I’m really moved by how our community came together to support her.

She has always done it and would have done it for anyone else. I’m confident that we will all continue to support her artistic endeavors when she is able to, since this will be an essential component of her healing process. Everyone who gave, shared, sent love, prayed, vibed, mowed the grass, and looked out for her close circle—who have also endured a great deal—is greatly appreciated. I hope you receive a thousand times as much kindness in return.

The close-knit neighborhood has been rocked by Laign’s attack and is banding together to assist her in starting over.

$68,000 has been received through a GoFundMe effort to assist the family with medical bills and other costs related to this terrible act of violence.
