Baltimore police arrest juveniles, ages 12 and 15, in armed carjacking, but both released on monitoring

BALTIMORE According to the Baltimore Police Department, two minors, aged 12 and 15, were taken into custody Thursday evening after reportedly committing an armed carjacking in Northwest Baltimore. Both were later placed under electronic surveillance, despite the seriousness of the offense.

Around 11:05 p.m., officers were called to the 3400 block of Piedmont Avenue in response to reports of an armed robbery. The stolen car was swiftly found by members of the Regional Auto Theft Taskforce with help from Foxtrot and County Aviation.

According to authorities, the suspects tried to escape on foot but were quickly caught. After being taken to the Juvenile Justice Center, authorities asked that both be placed under arrest. Instead, the juveniles were released under observation.

According to the police, the 15-year-old suspect has been arrested six times before on allegations of assault, auto theft, and handgun infractions.

As local authorities and law enforcement look for ways to deal with repeat offenders, the episode exacerbates already-existing worries about juvenile violence in the city.
